Jaspal Atwal former member of the now-banned International Sikh Youth federation then was spotted in Justin Trudeau’s event. Jaspal Atwal was sentenced to 20 years in prison for trying to kill the then Punjab cabinet minister. Malkiat Singh Sidhu was shot twice and survived on the Vancouver Island in 1986. Sidhu was later assassinated in India.
The details remain unknown as to how Jaspal Atwal got an Indian Visa and how he was allowed to attend official events in India.
Canada has described the invitation to Jaspal Atwal an oversight by its officers.
According to news agency IANS, Home ministry which maintains the list of blacklisted individuals says Jaspal Atwal’s name was not on the list for Indian origin foreigners from Punjab.
Mr. Atwal was photographed with Justin Trudeau’s wife at an event in Mumbai on February 20th.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said
“Obviously, we take this situation extremely seriously. The individual in question should never have received an invitation and, as soon as we found out, we rescinded the invitation immediately,” he told reporters. “The member of Parliament who included this individual has, and will, assume full responsibility for his actions.”
Canadian Member of Parliament admitted extending the invitation to Jaspal Atwal and said
“I (Randeep S Sarai) alone facilitated his request to attend this important event. I should have exercised better judgment, and I take full responsibility for my actions,”
