Indian railways get the highest ever budget allocation of Rs 1.48 crores.

To increase the train travel experience a capital expenditure of Rs 1.48 crores is allocated by the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. Additionally, the budget has Rs 2028 crores, to reimburse operating losses on strategic lines and for the operational cost of the e-ticketing by IRCTC.

The budget allocated will focus on increasing the capacity which includes track doubling, and the 3rd and 4th line works of 18,000 km, 5000 km of gauge conversion.

Re-development of 600 railway stations, modern train sets, and escalators for the stations with footfalls of over 25,000.

The suburban rail system will be expanded at cost of Rs10, 000 crores. An additional suburban network worth Rs 40, 000 crores is also being planned, including elevated corridors.

Similarly, 160 km of suburban rail network worth Rs17, 000 crores has been planned for Bengaluru.

Chief Minister of Maharashtra tweeted ‘Celebrate Mumbai’ after the rail budget announcement.

This project is said to be a joint venture between the state government and the Indian Railway. The state government will bear 20 per cent of Rs 349 crores of the total cost.
